Guelph, ON – The Guelph Nighthawks today announced that Shane James will assume the position of assistant general manager for the Canadian Elite Basketball League club during the upcoming 2021 season. James will work with Head Coach and General Manager Charles Kissi , focusing on scouting Canadian talent and player personnel decisions for the Nighthawks.

Shane James has spent a lifetime involved in all levels of the Canadian and international basketball landscape. As the founder and director of the Under Armour Canada Elite AAU basketball program, James has played a role in the development of some of Canada’s NBA talent including current New Orleans Pelican Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Orlando Magic Karim Mane, and South Sudanese Thon Maker of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Kissi commented, “I am looking forward to working with Shane to build a sustainable championship product in Guelph.  Shane has a great understanding of the game, strong relationships in the game and he is well respected in the basketball community.  Our mission is clear.  Win a championship this season. Our job is to assemble the players that can help us execute that vision.”

Prior to launching the Canada Elite AAU program James played four seasons of NCAA Division 1 basketball at Loyola University where he started 80 of 114 games, averaging 7.1 points, 3.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds over four seasons, winning MAAC Conference All-Rookie Team honours and Loyola’s team MVP award. Following his student-athlete career James played professionally overseas in the Czech Republic, Mexico and Switzerland, before returning back to his roots in Ontario. In 2013 James launched the Under Armour Canada Elite AAU basketball program and founded the Canadian Youth Basketball League. It was here that James was able to hone the talents of some of Canada’s rising basketball talent. The programs have developed over 80 players that have played in the NCAA and USPORTS, including a number that have called both the Canadian Elite Basketball League and NBA home.

James stated, “I am extremely excited to join the Guelph Nighthawks for the 2021 season. My job is to assist with putting together the best possible product on the floor. Everyone, especially our fans should expect to see some entertaining basketball. ”

Charles Kissi and Shane James have begun preparations for the start of
CEBL free agency at Noon ET on February 1, as the Nighthawks assemble its roster for the upcoming 2021 season.
