Three-year Rattlers Lead Assistant Coach promoted ahead of 2025 season

The Saskatchewan Rattlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Thursday that they have promoted Eric Magdanz to Head Coach for the 2025 season after serving three years as the Lead Assistant Coach with the club.


The Saskatoon-local joined the Rattlers coaching staff ahead of the 2022 season helping lead the Rattlers to a quarterfinal berth, the deepest playoff run the Rattlers have seen since their 2019 inaugural Championship. Under Magdanz’ leadership the Rattlers look to return to Championship Weekend with their main goal being a second championship for the franchise.


“Eric has spent the last three seasons with the Rattlers as Lead Assistant, and the feedback about his performance I have received from the players and his colleagues has been glowing.” said General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations, Barry Rawlyk. “He and his family are well established in the community, and his year-round proximity will help the Rattlers organization to further support the development of basketball in Saskatchewan.”


In his first two seasons with the Rattlers, he helped lead the team to a regular season record of 19-21. The Rattlers secured a playoff spot in 2022 in their final regular season game after beating two-time CEBL champion Edmonton Stingers (94-91) at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, SK. They also held a league-best home record of 8-2 in 2022.

After a roster turnover during the 2024 season, Magdanz instilled trust in key players, Cody John and Jaden Bediako to help lead the franchise through the remainder of the season. John, Bediako, and Head Coach Magdanz will reunite at 2025 Rattlers Training Camp ahead of their season opener on May 15th at SaskTel Centre.


“Eric is a high character individual that will be able to provide elite level leadership to the team and develop a winning culture both on the court and in the community.” said General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations, Barry Rawlyk. “In light of the times we are in, giving a Canadian an opportunity to lead the Saskatchewan Rattlers is appropriate.”


Growing up in Lloydminster, Magdanz played high school basketball, which led him to play at the U SPORTS level at McMaster University (2005-2009). He served as an assistant coach with the University of Alberta for two seasons (2010-2012) leading the 2012 team to a CanWest Championship and a second-place finish in the U SPORTS final. Magdanz went on to serve as head coach of MacEwan University for seven seasons. In the 2019 inaugural CEBL season, Magdanz secured an assistant coach title for the Edmonton Stingers. He has worked alongside Basketball Alberta, Basketball Saskatchewan, and the Senior Women’s National Team in a variety of roles. He has invested time with the Rattlers, developing youth basketball programs.

Canadian Elite Basketball League free agency will continue leading up to the announcement of the full training camp roster.


The full 2025 Rattlers schedule has been released, which features a new 24-game slate. The 2025 CEBL Playoffs are scheduled to begin Thursday, August 14 with the Conference Play-In games, followed by the Conference Semifinals on Saturday, August 16. The winners will advance to CW25 to join the Winnipeg Sea Bears (host team) and the top-ranked team from the Eastern Conference who are automatically seeded into the Conference Finals. The full playoff schedule with tipoff times will be announced at a later date.


General public and returning season ticket members can claim their seats for the entire Rattlers 2025 season by using Account Manager. Season tickets starting at $235 in the bronze. All tickets can also be purchased through the Rattlers Front Office (306) 244-2181, Saskatchewan Rattlers website, or via Ticketmaster. Flex Ticket Bundles can be purchased online or at the Rattlers Front Office, which features a minimum of four-tickets in any section with a bonus gift card to Moxies. Sea Bears Hire Elam, Creator of Innovative Basketball Scoring Format, as Target Score Time Strategist

The Winnipeg Sea Bears are bringing in one of basketball’s most innovative minds for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season, announcing Monday that Dr. Nick Elam, creator of the Elam Ending (known as Target Score Time in the CEBL), will join the club as its Target Score Time strategist. Elam will work alongside Head Coach and General Manager Mike Taylor and the Sea Bears coaching staff to analyze trends and inform late-game strategy. Known for revolutionizing how basketball games end, Elam’s expertise is expected to provide a significant competitive advantage under the CEBL’s unique format. “Coach Taylor reached out to me during the off-season about the possibility of teaming up with the Sea Bears to refine late-game strategy,” said Elam. “As the originator of the Elam Ending format used in CEBL and many other leagues and events, it was a call I knew would come eventually, I just wasn’t sure who would be the first team to reach out. I’m grateful to Coach Taylor for bringing me on board.” Taylor first encountered Elam’s work in 2018 while coaching Team Fredette at The Basketball Tournament (TBT), which uses the Elam Ending. The team reached the tournament’s final four in Baltimore. “It was my first experience with the Elam Ending and I loved it,” said Taylor. “I was intrigued by the strategy, and over the past few years in the CEBL, we’ve stayed in touch. Nick would always make time to answer my questions and talk about target score time. We’re really happy to have him officially join us.” Elam, who has spent thousands of hours researching the late-game format since first devising it in 2007, says his work with the Sea Bears will go beyond what’s been done before. “To this point, that research has been used to make late-game play more authentic and exciting,” said Elam. “There has been an untapped element of that research that can be used to help a team win. I’m glad the Sea Bears are the first team to seek the benefits of that research directly from the source.” Although Elam will work primarily remotely, he is expected to join the team in person during the season. “I am absolutely thrilled for the opportunity to make at least one trip to Winnipeg this season to meet the team in person, experience a Sea Bears game live, and explore the city,” he said. “Dining and sightseeing recommendations are welcome.” Elam’s role will include evaluating every target score time across the CEBL, identifying strategic tendencies, and helping the Sea Bears make better decisions in late-game moments. “Ever since the Elam Ending was first implemented at TBT in 2017, I have closely monitored various late-game strategies and their effectiveness everywhere it’s been played, including the CEBL, NBA G League, NBA All-Star Game, NBA Summer League, and others,” said Elam. “I see sound strategies used, and I see unsound strategies used. While no strategy can guarantee success, I am excited to work with the Sea Bears to implement strategies that offer the best chance of winning.” For Taylor, adding Elam is about gaining every edge possible. “We’ve featured an excellent analytics programme the last two summers, and now we’re looking to the inventor himself to bring his expertise to our team,” he said. “Nick is creative and thinks outside the box. Un natif de Mississauga, en Ontario, Panzo entame sa saison recrue dans la LECB après une carrière universitaire principalement passée à l’Université Stetson (ASUN), avant d’être transféré à l’Université Iona (MAAC) pour son année de maîtrise. Spécialiste du tir à trois points avec 644 tentatives en carrière NCAA, Panzo a établi un record du programme de Stetson en 2022-2023 avec un pourcentage de réussite de .469 derrière l’arc.
