The Hamilton Honey Badgers announced Monday that they have signed former G League champion, Trevon Duval for the 2021 season. The 6-foot-3 guard last played during the 2019-20 season, suiting up for the Iowa Wolves of the NBA G League, averaging 6.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 16.7 minutes.

Duval was one of the United States’ most highly decorated teenage stars and was ranked among the best players in the 2017 recruiting class by ESPN, Rivals, 247Sports, and Scout.com. In 2015 he was ranked by Scout as the third ranked prospect in all of high school on their “Ultimate 100” list. The consensus five-star prospect and 2017 McDonald’s All American committed to Duke University, where he joined fellow recruits Gary Trent Jr of the Toronto Raptors, Wendell Carter Jr of the Orlando Magic, and Marvin Bagley III of the Sacramento Kings. Duval played one season before declaring for the NBA draft. He played 37 games with the Blue Devils, starting 34, averaging 10.9 points, 5.6 assists and 2.0 rebounds.

Undrafted in 2018, Duval played in the 2018 NBA Summer League with the Houston Rockets before signing a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2018-19 season. He split time between the Bucks and their G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. Duval made his NBA debut February 8, 2019 with two points and an assist in a victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The Bucks waived Dural on March 24, 2019, and he was claimed by the Houston Rockets on a two-way contract, which was spent with their G League team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

“Trevon is a gifted point guard that is able to score, get into the paint and create scoring opportunities for his teammates”, said Honey Badgers general manager Jermaine Anderson. “Even though Trevon is young, I believe Coach Ryan and our staff will have a system in place that will utilize his strengths, while continuing to help develop his game. Trevon is still aspiring to make an NBA roster, and we’re going to do everything in our power to help him. More importantly, we believe that his willingness to learn and desire to win will put us in a position to be successful this season”.

Duval was selected fifth overall in the first round of the 2019 NBA G League Draft by the Iowa Wolves, the affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 6.9 points and 2.5 assists in 32 games with Iowa.

Duval’s decorated prep career began with St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey, before he transferred to Advanced Preparatory International in Dallas, Texas for his junior year. He played his senior year at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he averaged 16.1 points and 7.5 assists per game leading IMG to a 26-2 record. Duval played in the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic.

The Honey Badgers open training camp June 17 at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton. Their season tips off June 26 on the road against the Edmonton Stingers in a game that will be televised nationally on CBC. Stops at Saskatoon on June 28 and Ottawa on Canada Day precede their home-opener versus the Guelph Nighthawks at FirstOntario Centre on July 3. That home-opener will also be televised on CBC.

Hamilton is coming off a 4-4 record and third place finish in the 2020 CEBL Summer Series , which marked the first professional sports in Canada to return to play after Covid-19 halted sports in March of 2020. More than 1.2 million viewers across Canada watched games live on CBC, and games were carried to more than 130 million viewers around the world.
