Streaking River Lions host BlackJacks in Eastern Conference bout

The Niagara River Lions (-113) will look to win their fourth straight game in an Eastern Conference showdown with the Ottawa BlackJacks (-121) at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at the Meridian Centre. 


The game will be available for streaming on TSN+, CEBL+ powered by BetVictor and on the CEBL Mobile app available on iOS and Android devices.


Niagara is coming off wins against Calgary, Montreal and Ottawa – tonight’s opponent. Since reigning CEBL MVP Khalil Ahmad joined the squad on June 3, the River Lions have won five of six games. 


However, the squad won’t have much time to rest and recover from their 99-86 win over Calgary on Friday afternoon. Ahmad scored a game-high 30 points in the win, while Jahvon Henry-Blair scored 16 points on 66 per cent from the field.  The River Lions shot 50 per cent from the field, 45 per cent from three and forced 23 Calgary turnovers. 


Meanwhile, Ottawa is coming off a heartbreaking home loss to Montreal. The BlackJacks came back from 16 points down to take the lead into target score time against the Alliance but missed two chances to win, including a free throw. 


The loss dropped Ottawa to fourth place in the Eastern Conference at 4-5 on the season, behind Brampton at 5-5, Niagara at 5-4 and Scarborough at 5-4. The Eastern Conference is poised for a tight playoff race with a two-way tie for first place and just 1.5 games separating first from last. 


“You could end up winning the division, or you could end up being out of the playoffs and it might be a free throw that makes the difference,” Ottawa head coach James Derouin said.  “Everybody's aware of it in the division. I think you're seeing playoff-like atmosphere [and] intensity out there. That's because all the coaches and players are fully aware of the situation.”


Derouin says adjustments going forward for the BlackJacks include avoiding situations where there’s a large deficit to come back from. 


“We just got to find ways to limit the runs where we dig ourselves a hole,” Derouin said. “We continue to dig ourselves a hole and have to fight our way out of it. So we got to find a way not to fall apart and then use so much energy trying to come back in the game.”


In the previous meeting between Ottawa and Niagara last Sunday, the River Lions earned a 93-82 win powered by an all-around performance from Ahmad and five players in double figures. Ahmad tallied 19 points, eight assists and six steals in the win. 


Niagara brings an excellent offence with a deep roster into Saturday’s contest. The River Lions lead the league in both points per game and field percentage. Their attack is highlighted by the backcourt of Ahmad and Henry-Blair, who average 17.2 points and 15.7 points respectively. 


Edward Ekiyor’s energy off the bench has provided Niagara with steady scoring and rebounding, while Antonio Davis Jr. and Lloyd Pandi stuff the scoresheet as well. Reigning CEBL Defensive Player of the Year EJ Onu is continuing to provide elite rim protection while averaging just under nine points per game. 


On the other side, Ottawa could come out with a new-look lineup on Saturday. The BlackJacks’ top scorer and passer Kadre Gray missed Thursday’s game against the Alliance with an injury. The Canadian facilitator is averaging 17.4 points and 6.9 assists on 49 per cent shooting in eight starts. However, the guard’s status for the game against Niagara is up in the air. 


The BlackJacks can compensate for Gray's possible absence with the potential debut of 2022 CEBL Champion and Canadian Player of the Year Caleb Agada. The team announced the signing of Agada for the remainder of the 2023 CEBL season on Friday. In last year’s championship run with the Honey Badgers, Agada averaged 12.4 points and 6 rebounds in 21 starts.

One sure thing for Ottawa is the presence of Deng Adel. Adel is a complete player that provides scoring, rebounding and playmaking to the BlackJacks. He led their comeback on Thursday night and averages 16.6 points, 7 rebounds and 5.4 assists on the season. Ottawa will also look to sharpshooter Michael Flowers, big man Zena Edosomwan and veteran playmaker Thomas Scrubb to step up and contribute. 


The teams will meet again on July 20 at TD Place.

Sea Bears Hire Elam, Creator of Innovative Basketball Scoring Format, as Target Score Time Strategist

The Winnipeg Sea Bears are bringing in one of basketball’s most innovative minds for the upcoming Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) season, announcing Monday that Dr. Nick Elam, creator of the Elam Ending (known as Target Score Time in the CEBL), will join the club as its Target Score Time strategist. Elam will work alongside Head Coach and General Manager Mike Taylor and the Sea Bears coaching staff to analyze trends and inform late-game strategy. Known for revolutionizing how basketball games end, Elam’s expertise is expected to provide a significant competitive advantage under the CEBL’s unique format. “Coach Taylor reached out to me during the off-season about the possibility of teaming up with the Sea Bears to refine late-game strategy,” said Elam. “As the originator of the Elam Ending format used in CEBL and many other leagues and events, it was a call I knew would come eventually, I just wasn’t sure who would be the first team to reach out. I’m grateful to Coach Taylor for bringing me on board.” Taylor first encountered Elam’s work in 2018 while coaching Team Fredette at The Basketball Tournament (TBT), which uses the Elam Ending. The team reached the tournament’s final four in Baltimore. “It was my first experience with the Elam Ending and I loved it,” said Taylor. “I was intrigued by the strategy, and over the past few years in the CEBL, we’ve stayed in touch. Nick would always make time to answer my questions and talk about target score time. We’re really happy to have him officially join us.” Elam, who has spent thousands of hours researching the late-game format since first devising it in 2007, says his work with the Sea Bears will go beyond what’s been done before. “To this point, that research has been used to make late-game play more authentic and exciting,” said Elam. “There has been an untapped element of that research that can be used to help a team win. I’m glad the Sea Bears are the first team to seek the benefits of that research directly from the source.” Although Elam will work primarily remotely, he is expected to join the team in person during the season. “I am absolutely thrilled for the opportunity to make at least one trip to Winnipeg this season to meet the team in person, experience a Sea Bears game live, and explore the city,” he said. “Dining and sightseeing recommendations are welcome.” Elam’s role will include evaluating every target score time across the CEBL, identifying strategic tendencies, and helping the Sea Bears make better decisions in late-game moments. “Ever since the Elam Ending was first implemented at TBT in 2017, I have closely monitored various late-game strategies and their effectiveness everywhere it’s been played, including the CEBL, NBA G League, NBA All-Star Game, NBA Summer League, and others,” said Elam. “I see sound strategies used, and I see unsound strategies used. While no strategy can guarantee success, I am excited to work with the Sea Bears to implement strategies that offer the best chance of winning.” For Taylor, adding Elam is about gaining every edge possible. “We’ve featured an excellent analytics programme the last two summers, and now we’re looking to the inventor himself to bring his expertise to our team,” he said. “Nick is creative and thinks outside the box. Un natif de Mississauga, en Ontario, Panzo entame sa saison recrue dans la LECB après une carrière universitaire principalement passée à l’Université Stetson (ASUN), avant d’être transféré à l’Université Iona (MAAC) pour son année de maîtrise. Spécialiste du tir à trois points avec 644 tentatives en carrière NCAA, Panzo a établi un record du programme de Stetson en 2022-2023 avec un pourcentage de réussite de .469 derrière l’arc. Il détient également le record de l’équipe pour le plus grand nombre de tirs à trois points réussis dans un seul match, avec 10 réussites le 10 décembre 2022 contre Webber. « Nous sommes ravis d’accueillir Wheza au sein de la famille des BlackJacks d’Ottawa, » a déclaré James Derouin, directeur général des BlackJacks. « En tant que joueur professionnel canadien de première année, il apporte une combinaison précieuse de tir extérieur d’élite et d’un QI basket impressionnant à notre effectif.
