The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday the signing of Canadian Forward Jermel Kennedy for the upcoming 2024 CEBL season. A six-foot-seven forward from Malton, Ontario, Jermel Kennedy is set to bring a wealth of experience to the Capital for the team’s fifth season. Kennedy has been playing professionally for 10 years, including having played with four CEBL teams. Kennedy has also played professionally in Iraq, Mozambique, as well as in the United Kingdom, France, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Finland, Uruguay, and Germany. Currently concluding his 2023-24 campaign with Zakho in Iraq, Kennedy also competed with Ferroviario de Beira in Mozambique earlier this year, averaging 10.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 34.6 minutes in the Qualifications for Basketball Africa League (BAL). Kennedy was welcomed back to Ferroviario de Beira this season after competing with the team during the inaugural BAL season in 2021-22, where he helped lead Ferroviario to the quarter-finals averaging 13.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 31.0 minutes in 12 games with the team. The Basketball Africa League was introduced by the NBA and FIBA, highlighting African basketball players with the addition of two non-African players per roster. Kennedy has previous CEBL experience, having played with the Saskatchewan Rattlers, the Newfoundland Growlers, the Brampton Honey Badgers (formerly known as Hamilton Honey Badgers) and with the Guelph Nighthawks in the CEBL’s inaugural season. This past summer with the Saskatchewan Rattlers, he played in all 20 regular season games. He averaged 7.7 points per game and grabbed a season-high 13 rebound on July 2 against Niagara. Kennedy was recognized by the Newfoundland Growlers with the Unsung Hero Award in 2022, while he averaged 7.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 27.7 minutes in 19 games played. Collegiately, Kennedy split his career between Lander University (2010-12), Volunteer State Community College (2009-10), and Iowa Community College (2008-09). In his first year with Lander, Kennedy played in 26 games in the NCAA Division II, averaging 10.2 points and 8.4 rebounds, which earned him the team Rebounding award for the season. EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Stingers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday the signing of Canadian guard Ryan Richmond to their 2024 roster. After a four year standout career at Bentley (NCAA DII), Richmond has three years of pro experience in Germany and Spain. “I’m very grateful to have been blessed with the opportunity to have my first CEBL season be with the Edmonton Stingers,“ said Richmond. “[It is] a successful franchise with amazing fans and culture. I’m excited to play with my new teammates and coach Baker. I’m looking forward to contributing in every way I can to the team’s success this summer.” The Toronto native finished this last season splitting time with Melilla CB of the Spanish LEB Gold and SG Luetzel of the German Pro A league, averaging 9.9 points per game across both teams. He played two seasons in German domestic leagues in the years prior, averaging 16.4 points per game in 60 games from 2021 - 2023. Before turning pro, the 6’1” guard had a successful career with the Bentley Falcons where he owns three of the top five scoring averages in school history. He averaged 23.0 points per game in his senior year – a mark aided by a 44-point performance on January 16th vs American International – alongside a career high 3.6 assists. In his junior year he put up a career best 23.6 per game; before that he eclipsed the 20-point per game average mark in just his sophomore season, notching a 22.6 per game average. Across his NCAA career he racked up numerous individual accolades including an NABC Division II All-America Team in his senior year and numerous all-conference selections throughout his four year career. Richmond joins the Stingers backcourt alongside returning guards Adika Peter-McNeilly and Elijah Miller, as well as 2024 additions Mike Nuga and Davion Warren. CEBL Draft selections Nate Petrone and Taye Donald pad out the Stingers guard options. Training camp begins on May 12th, nine days before the Stingers tip-off their CEBL season in Calgary on May 21st. Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Rattlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that the club signed 6-foot-8 Somto Dimanochie for the 2024 season. The Canadian forward made his professional debut in 2022 after being selected by the Edmonton Stingers in the CEBL Draft. The York University alumni returns for his third CEBL season with the Saskatchewan Rattlers. “Somto is a player with great potential that ran into some injury problems last year in the CEBL,” said General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations, Barry Rawlyk. “He brings a combination of size and athleticism that is rare in this league. We look for him to raise the level of competition on our team.” Dimanochie played two consecutive seasons with the Edmonton Stingers; 2022 11th overall pick, and 2023 fourth overall pick. During his time in the CEBL, he averaged 2.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 5.9 minutes in 13 games. His 2023 season was cut short due to injury, and he spent the 2023-24 season training for his return. Prior to his professional debut, Dimanochie played four seasons with OUA’s York University Lions averaging 11.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 25.3 minutes playing 67 games with 61 appearances in the starting lineup. During his third season with the Lions, he grabbed a total of 140 rebounds which was ranked second in the OUA and first on the team. He averaged 20.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.8 blocks, 0.9 steals, and 31.0 minutes in 20 games during his final season. Closing out his time with York, he put up two career-best 32 point performances which led to him earning Team MVP honours. He was dominant as a senior in the OUA, ranked seventh for points per game (20.3), third for total blocks (33), and second for rebounds per game (11.3). “I am excited for the opportunity, and excited for this new challenge,” said Dimanochie. “I can’t wait to meet the Rattlers fans this year.” Somto Dimanochie joins the newly assembled roster consisting of Bryson Williams , Elijah Harkless , Emmanuel Bandoumel , Cody John , Maurice Calloo , Adong Makuoi , and 2023 Rattlers Defensive Player of the Year - Anthony Tsegakele . The Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that they have signed the 2023 CEBL Canadian Player of the Year, Kadre Gray. Gray averaged 16.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.5 minutes per game for Ottawa last season. He led the CEBL regular season in assists per game and was also named to the 2023 CEBL All-Canadian team. The Toronto native is currently playing for GTK in the Poland-OBL where he is averaging a team high 9 assists per game in addition to 15.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 33.2 minutes through 28 games. Gray posted nine double-double games in points and assists this season and recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists on April 20 vs. Sokol. The Laurentian graduate is one of the most decorated players in Canadian university basketball history. He captured 10 major awards over his four years with the Voyageurs including 2017-18 U SPORTS Athlete of the Year, 2017-18 and 2018-19 U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian award, three consecutive OUA Player of the Year selections and 2016-17 OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. Gray joins his 2023 teammate Jackson Rowe on Scarborough’s roster this season. Other new faces include Hason Ward, Jaden Campbell and 2024 CEBL Draft picks Koat Thomas and Davante Hackett. The Calgary Surge have signed Matt Grace for the 2024 season, the team announced Monday. Grace most recently played in the OPAP Basket League, the top-tier level of men’s professional basketball in the Cypriot basketball league system, for the APOEL Nicosia. During the 2023-24 season, he averaged 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.6 blocks, 0.6 steals, and 23.2 minutes in 18 games played. “We are excited to have Matt sign with the Surge. Matt had a great season overseas and has been able to get some professional experience under his belt,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James. “Matt also fits into Coach Vernon’s system because of his ability to shoot the ball and space the floor.” In 2023, Grace graduated from the University of Richmond in Virginia where he averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.7 blocks, 0.5 steals and 27.8 minutes through 29 games played with the Spiders. In 2022, the Hamilton, Ontario native also led the Spiders to an Atlantic-10 Championship by making the game winning field goal. “I’ve only heard great things about the Surge organization and the city of Calgary,” said Surge forward Matt Grace. “I can’t wait to get out there and get the season started.” Prior to his time with the NCAA D1 program, he graduated from the RISE Centre Academy in Brantford, Ontario. The 6-foot-5 guard played two seasons at Florida SouthWestern State College before transferring to Samford University. Campbell averaged 11.3 points and 3.3 rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game through 32 games for the Bulldogs last season. The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Monday the signing of American Forward Jakeenan Gant for the upcoming 2024 CEBL season. A six-foot-eight forward from Springfield, Georgia, Gant has competed in Israel, France, South Korea, in the NBA G League, and in the CEBL across a six-year professional career following a successful NCAA Division I collegiate career. Last summer, Gant averaged 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in eight games played with the BlackJacks. He recorded season highs of 13 points and seven rebounds while also hitting the Target Score winning bucket on July 9 against Vancouver. Gant gained his first CEBL experience during the summer of 2021 with the Saskatchewan Rattlers, averaging 13.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in seven games. Gant spent the 2023-24 campaign in Israel with Hapoel Beer Sheva. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in 25 games played. He scored a season-high 32 points to go along with five rebounds, one assist, and three steals on Dec. 9 vs. Ironi Nes Ziona. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette alumnus tipped off his professional career with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA G League. In 29 games played, he averaged 8.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 16.5 minutes. He scored a season-high 27 points, shooting 11-for-19 from the field and four-for-eight from three-point range on January 3 against the Capital City Go-Go. He also played four games with the Indiana Pacers at the 2019 NBA Summer League and averaged 3.0 points and 2.5 rebounds. Gant split his university career between the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (63 games) and the University of Missouri Tigers (53 games). As a senior with the Ragin' Cajuns, Gant earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors, was named the league's Defensive Player for the second straight year and claimed Lefty Driesell Defensive All-America honors for the second consecutive year. He led Louisiana and finished third in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in scoring (20.5), led the league in rebounds (8.7), blocked shots (2.6), and double-doubles (13) while finishing second in the SBC in field goal percentage (.543) and offensive rebounds per game (3.2). He finished the season ranked in the top 50 among Division I players in six categories, and his 81 blocked shots and 2.6 blocks per game average were the fourth-best, single-season marks in school history. After a four year standout career at Bentley (NCAA DII), Richmond has three years of pro experience in Germany and Spain. “I’m very grateful to have been blessed with the opportunity to have my first CEBL season be with the Edmonton Stingers,“ said Richmond. “[It is] a successful franchise with amazing fans and culture. Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Rattlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that the club signed 6-foot-8 Somto Dimanochie for the 2024 season. The Canadian forward made his professional debut in 2022 after being selected by the Edmonton Stingers in the CEBL Draft. The York University alumni returns for his third CEBL season with the Saskatchewan Rattlers. “Somto is a player with great potential that ran into some injury problems last year in the CEBL,” said General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations, Barry Rawlyk. “He brings a combination of size and athleticism that is rare in this league. We look for him to raise the level of competition on our team.” Dimanochie played two consecutive seasons with the Edmonton Stingers; 2022 11th overall pick, and 2023 fourth overall pick. During his time in the CEBL, he averaged 2.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 5.9 minutes in 13 games. His 2023 season was cut short due to injury, and he spent the 2023-24 season training for his return. Prior to his professional debut, Dimanochie played four seasons with OUA’s York University Lions averaging 11.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 25.3 minutes playing 67 games with 61 appearances in the starting lineup. During his third season with the Lions, he grabbed a total of 140 rebounds which was ranked second in the OUA and first on the team. He averaged 20.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.8 blocks, 0.9 steals, and 31.0 minutes in 20 games during his final season. Closing out his time with York, he put up two career-best 32 point performances which led to him earning Team MVP honours. The Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Tuesday that they have signed the 2023 CEBL Canadian Player of the Year, Kadre Gray. Gray averaged 16.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.5 minutes per game for Ottawa last season. He led the CEBL regular season in assists per game and was also named to the 2023 CEBL All-Canadian team. The Toronto native is currently playing for GTK in the Poland-OBL where he is averaging a team high 9 assists per game in addition to 15.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 33.2 minutes through 28 games. Gray posted nine double-double games in points and assists this season and recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists on April 20 vs. Sokol. The Laurentian graduate is one of the most decorated players in Canadian university basketball history. He captured 10 major awards over his four years with the Voyageurs including 2017-18 U SPORTS Athlete of the Year, 2017-18 and 2018-19 U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Player of the Year, U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian award, three consecutive OUA Player of the Year selections and 2016-17 OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year. The Calgary Surge have signed Matt Grace for the 2024 season, the team announced Monday. Grace most recently played in the OPAP Basket League, the top-tier level of men’s professional basketball in the Cypriot basketball league system, for the APOEL Nicosia. During the 2023-24 season, he averaged 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.6 blocks, 0.6 steals, and 23.2 minutes in 18 games played. “We are excited to have Matt sign with the Surge. Matt had a great season overseas and has been able to get some professional experience under his belt,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James. “Matt also fits into Coach Vernon’s system because of his ability to shoot the ball and space the floor.” In 2023, Grace graduated from the University of Richmond in Virginia where he averaged 8.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.7 blocks, 0.5 steals and 27.8 minutes through 29 games played with the Spiders. The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Monday the signing of American Forward Jakeenan Gant for the upcoming 2024 CEBL season. A six-foot-eight forward from Springfield, Georgia, Gant has competed in Israel, France, South Korea, in the NBA G League, and in the CEBL across a six-year professional career following a successful NCAA Division I collegiate career. Last summer, Gant averaged 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in eight games played with the BlackJacks. He recorded season highs of 13 points and seven rebounds while also hitting the Target Score winning bucket on July 9 against Vancouver. Gant gained his first CEBL experience during the summer of 2021 with the Saskatchewan Rattlers, averaging 13.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in seven games. Gant spent the 2023-24 campaign in Israel with Hapoel Beer Sheva. He averaged 14.9 points and 5.9 rebounds in 25 games played. He scored a season-high 32 points to go along with five rebounds, one assist, and three steals on Dec. 9 vs. Ironi Nes Ziona. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette alumnus tipped off his professional career with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA G League. In 29 games played, he averaged 8.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 16.5 minutes. He scored a season-high 27 points, shooting 11-for-19 from the field and four-for-eight from three-point range on January 3 against the Capital City Go-Go. The Texas Tech alumni has competed in two G-League seasons, most recently with the Long Island Nets where he averaged 11.6 points per game in 21 appearances. “I’m excited to be a part of the Edmonton family,” said Warren. “I’m looking forward to the loud atmosphere and great attendance by the fans and plan to bring the CEBL Championship back to Edmonton.” This past season, Warren was an efficient scorer off the bench, playing 17.8 minutes per and averaging 11.6 points on 53% field goal shooting. The 6-foot-7 forward recently played for Santa Cruz of the NBA G League where he averaged 12.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.1 blocks and 1.2 steals in 30 minutes per game through 49 games. The Toronto native is no stranger to the CEBL. Rowe played the past two seasons in Ottawa where he averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 26.8 minutes per game over 31 games for the BlackJacks. He was named to the CEBL All-Canadian team in 2023. The Brampton Honey Badgers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Friday the signing of Greek forward Petros Melissaratos to the roster. Melissaratos has played the entirety of his 12-year professional career in the top two leagues in Greece (Greek A1 Basket League and Greek A2 Basket League), averaging 9.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 20.2 minutes in 260 games. He brings a veteran presence to the Honey Badgers roster with experience in FIBA 3x3 events and the Greek national team. “Petros brings leadership and experience to our organization with his international resume,” said Jermaine Anderson, general manager and vice president of basketball operations. “We’re confident that he will positively impact our younger players throughout the season.” In 32 games this season with Aons Milonas Athens, Melissaratos is averaging 8.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 21.3 minutes. The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Friday the signing of Canadian Guard Yasiin Joseph for the upcoming 2024 CEBL season. A six-foot-one guard from Ottawa, Ontario, Yasiin Joseph is set to make his return to the Capital after making his professional debut with the Ottawa BlackJacks at the 2020 CEBL Summer Series in St. Catharines. Joseph has also played professionally in several European countries, including France, Hungary, Ukraine, and the Netherlands. Currently concluding his 2023-24 campaign with ALM Evreux in the LNB Pro B in France, Joseph is averaging 12.6 points, 4.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 27.7 minutes in 30 games played this season. He scored 15 or more points in 18 games, including 20 points on January 26 against AVA. He recorded two double-doubles, one on March 29 against Saint Chamond Basket (14 points and a season-high 11 assists) and another on October 17 against Aix Maurienne Savoie Basket (11 points and 10 rebounds). The Montréal Alliance is pleased to announce the signing of Jahenns Manigat for the 2024 season of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). The six-foot-one guard played the 2023 CEBL season with the Vancouver Bandits where he averaged 6.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 22.9 minutes per game. Manigat also played the 2020 season with the Bandits, being named to the All-CEBL Second Team following a 13.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 30.5 minutes per game season. “Jahenns will bring a veteran presence and extensive experience in the league, which will undoubtedly strengthen our team both on and off the court,” said Alliance General Manager Joel Anthony. “His leadership and knowledge of the game will be invaluable assets as we continue to develop our young talent.” Following the 2023 CEBL season, Manigat joined Vellaznimi in Kosovo’s Superleague where he averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 12 games. The Scarborough Shooting Stars of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Thursday that they have signed Bajan born Hason Ward. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 4.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 12.3 minutes per game over 51 games in two seasons with the Iowa State Cyclones. Prior to transferring to Iowa in 2022, Ward played three seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University. During his sophomore year, he ranked second in the Atlantic-10 and 21 nationally in blocked shots per game. He was also named to the 2020-21 Atlantic-10 Conference All-Defensive Team. Saskatoon, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Rattlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that the club signed 6-foot-8 California-native Bryson Williams for the 2024 season. The American forward made his professional debut playing in the NBA Summer League with the Miami Heat. Williams will make his CEBL debut in Saskatchewan, reuniting with Elijah Harkless and Coach Larry Abney after their season with the Ontario Clippers (Los Angeles Clippers affiliate). “Bryson is a major signing for us and is expected to be a significant contributor to the success of our team through both his play and leadership in the locker room,” said General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations, Barry Rawlyk. “His versatility as a power forward will cause difficult match-ups for opponents. I am excited to see his impact this season.” During his professional career, Williams has played two seasons with five teams in the NBA, NBA G League, NBA Summer League, France, and Israel. He has a professional career average of 9.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.1 assist, and 21.9 minutes while playing in 95 games. After his professional debut with the Miami Heat in the NBA Summer League, Williams signed a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers which led him to play with the Ontario Clippers of the NBA G League during the 2022-23 season. Over two seasons with the Ontario Clippers, he averaged 9.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 23.3 minutes in 57 games appearing in the starting line 34 times. During his most recent season with the Ontario Clippers, Williams led his team in total rebounds (207), ranked second for total blocks (29), and fourth for total points (348). While with the Clippers organization, Williams has had the opportunity to play during the NBA G League Showcase Cup, NBA Summer League, and in the NBA preseason. During the NBA offseason as a rookie, Williams made his international debut in 2023 playing in France with JL Bourg-en-Bresse of LNB Elite averaging 9.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.1 assist, and 19.0 minutes while shooting 50.9% from the field in seven games. Williams was named North Yosemite League MVP, and Fresno Offensive Player of the Year. The California-native made his NCAA debut with Fresno State University. While playing two seasons with the Bulldogs, he averaged 10.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 22.8 minutes playing 65 games with 58 appearances as a starter. As a sophomore, he was named to the 2018 All-Mountain West Third Team. Finishing his time with Fresno State ranked fifth-most all-time for total points (2302) in Central Section History – most-ever in the city of Fresno. As a junior and a top-five NCAA D1 transfer, he joined UTEP where he played two seasons, averaging 16.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 31.5 minutes while starting in all 56 games. During his time with UTEP, he was recognized as 2020 All-Conference USA First Team, 2020 NABC All-District First Team, and 2021 NABC All-District Second Team. For his final NCAA season, Williams transferred to Texas Tech where he started in all 37 games averaging 14.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 25.6 minutes, and led the Big 12 with a 53.5% field-goal percentage. Texas Tech finished their season with a 27-10 record, appeared in the Big-12 Championship Final, and made an appearance in the Sweet 16 during March Madness. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 12.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 25.8 minutes per game over 18 games for Scarborough last season. Walker, a high school phenom, decided to forego collegiate basketball and signed a training camp roster with the Washington Wizards of the NBA in 2021. He played that season for their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, where he averaged 7.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game over 37 games. The Haywood, California native most recently played for Apes of the Mongolia-MBL averaging 21.5 points, 5 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2 steals in 19.5 minutes per game. He becomes the fourth returning player from Scarborough’s 2023 championship team; joining CEBL all-time leading scorer Cat Barber and forwards Kalif Young and Danilo Djuricic on this year’s roster. The Shooting Stars open training camp May 15. The reigning CEBL Champions play their first game of the season on May 24 at the Canada Life Centre where they will take on the Winnipeg Sea Bears.
