Rattlers Add American Wing Hughes III
The Fayetteville, NC forward adds depth to the Rattlers frontcourt

The Saskatchewan Rattlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Thursday that the club has signed 6-foot-8 Johnny Hughes III from Fayetteville, North Carolina for the 2025 season. Hughes III will make his CEBL debut tonight (June 26) when the Rattlers host the Calgary Surge at SaskTel Centre.
“Johnny will bring a blend of some blue-collar work ethic and athleticism to our roster,” said General Manager and Vice-President of Basketball Operations, Barry Rawlyk. “We really like his versatility and the ability to defend multiple positions that comes along with his athleticism.”
During his three-year professional career, Hughes III has played with five teams in Cyprus, Estonia, and Mexico. He has a career average of 14.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.7 blocks, and 25.3 minutes in 164 games while shooting 48 per cent from the field.
Hughes III made his professional debut with Enosis Neon Paralimni of Cypriot Division A averaging 10.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.0 blocks, and 23.1 minutes in five games. In his debut professional season, Hughes III signed a new contract with Caballeros de Culiacan of Mexican CIBACOPA. While with Caballeros de Culiacan he averaged 15.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.4 steals, 0.6 blocks, and 27.0 minutes while shooting 46.8 per cent from the field in 40 games with 39 starts.
Hughes III played two more seasons in the Mexican CIBACOPA with Angeles de la Ciudad de Mexico (2024) and returned to Caballeros de Culiacan (2025). During those two seasons he averaged 14.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals, 0.7 blocks, and 26.0 minutes while shooting 48.5 per cent from the field in 80 games with 71 starts. On May 4, 2025, he set a professional career-high of 17 rebounds accompanied by 13 points, one assists, one steal, and one block in 32 minutes.
Hughes III played five seasons prior to his professional career with Fayetteville Tech CC (NJCAA), Mount Olive (NCAA D2), and Incarnate Word (NCAA D1). Making his collegiate debut in 2017, Hughes III played in his hometown for Fayetteville Tech CC. He played two seasons and he holds the school record for individual season rebounds with 309, which he achieved in his 2018-19 season.
Hughes III transferred to Mount Olive for the 2019-20 season where he played two seasons. In his final season with Mount Olive he averaged 18.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks, and 28.4 minutes in 14 games while shooting 51.0 per cent from the field. He earned Conference Carolinas All-First Team.
Before entering his professional career, Hughes III played his final year of eligibility with Incarnate Word. He averaged 11.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.6 steals, 0.6 blocks, and 20.7 minutes while shooting 48.5 per cent from the field in 14 games.

The 2025 schedule has been released, which features a new 24-game slate. The 2025 CEBL Playoffs are scheduled to begin Thursday, August 14 with the Conference Play-In games, followed by the Conference Semifinals on Saturday, August 16. The winners will advance to CW25 to join the Winnipeg Sea Bears (host team) and the top-ranked team from the Eastern Conference who are automatically seeded into the Conference Finals. The full playoff schedule with tipoff times will be announced at a later date.
